The Costa Blanca, the 'White Coast', is 200 km long and dotted with numerous sandy beaches. The Costa Blanca gets its name from the numerous almond trees found here which in spring are full of pink and white flowers. Gran Alacant is located just 8 km from Alicante. A visit to the old town of Alicante is highly recommended. 'El Casco Antiguo' (old town) is relatively small and is situated between the Rambla, a boulevard where the ancient city walls once stood, and the hill where the castle of Santa Barbara is located. The old district of Santa Cruz is comprised of small, narrow streets with stairs and was built against the slopes of Monte Benacantil. The picturesque streets are surrounded by small white houses, lavishly furnished and decorated with floral tiles. The Cathedral of St Nicholas (Concatedrál de San Nicolás de Bari) is located in Herrera and was built in baroque style and was completed in 1662. Its square outer shape gives it a bizarre appearance. The Iglesia de Santa Maria is originally a Gothic church, which was built upon the foundations of a Moorish mosque. Through the windows you can still see the remnants of the former mosque. The church was later adorned with baroque gables. Torrevieja is another nice place to visit. Torrevieja is known primarily for its beautiful beaches, situated on the seafront and surrounded by two large natural salt lakes, which are the largest in Europe. The island of Tabarca lies before the Spanish coast, just a few kilometers from Santa Pola. The island has a length of only 1,800 meters and a maximum width of 400 meters. The island was once used as a fortress against the invading Berbers from North Africa. From the Genoese populated village sprang up a square road scheme, in accordance with the ideas of the renaissance. It was surrounded by a defensive wall which included two gates. On the eastern part of Tabarca you will find a lighthouse dating from 1854. On the extreme eastern point is a cemetery. The island is low and often windy and the clear water around the island makes it a source of new life. You can easily explore the island on foot. The surrounding area of the island has been designated a marine reserve. In the immediate vicinity there are a number of smaller, uninhabited islands with cliffs. Besides beautiful sandy beaches the Costa Blanca offers numerous other attractions.
