Local areaA holiday in the region of Murcia, in southeastern Spain between Alicante and Almeria, means a trip to the most sun-drenched beaches of Spain. But there is more to do in Murcia than just swim and lie on the beach. This is a very diverse region with mountains, open plains, dense forests and desert landscapes dotted with palm trees. And everywhere you will find beautiful old baroque towns with their local and traditional folklore. A holiday in Murcia is one big party. It is also an ideal base for exploring this wonderful part of Spain. Here you are always near a lovely beach. Inland you can enjoy the versatile beauty of the southern Spanish province of Murcia, around the city of the same name.
The city of Murcia was founded in 831 during the period of Arab domination. It is situated amidst the beautiful valley of the Segura River. Especially after the 16th century, the city flourished and expanded outside the medieval walls. A number of baroque churches and chapels have been preserved from that time: La Merced, San Miguel, Santa Ana, Las Claras, Santo Domingo, Santa Eulalia and San Juan de Dios.
If you would like to see the real Spain, there are many options near your apartment. The smaller city of Lorca is another jewel of the region. In this city you'll find many stately mansions and palaces such as Guevara Palace. The city is also known for its special pottery and ceramics painted in typical colors. Near the beautiful coastal town of Cartagena there is a route with restored windmills: the Ruta de los Molinos.
The inland is dominated by a fantastic landscape: the forests and mountains of the Sierra Espuña near Alhama de Murcia; the beautiful Ricote Valley; and Cenajo Reservoir, a reservoir in a rugged canyon. Wellness possibilities? Enjoy one of the many luxurious spas in the province of Murcia, which include healing mineral water, thalassotherapy and beauty packages. |
