Local areaWithin half an hours drive from the estate you can visit the pristine and breathtaking bays and beaches of the Mediterranean, the beautiful mountains of "Els Ports" (Ports de Tortosa-Beseit), the characteristic village of Horta de San Juan and medium-sized city of Tortosa with its many medieval buildings, restaurants and great shopping facilities. From the Finca (estate) you can see the mountain ranges of the "Els Ports" nature area. The Els Ports form a rough mountainous whole that blends naturally with the Maestrat Castellon and Teruel and contains numerous hiking and biking trails. The mountain range is about 800 km² long and spreads over eleven municipalities. Mont Caro is the highest peak of the massif at 1420m. On a clear day, when the mistral blows, from Mont Caro you can see the Pyrenees to the north and the Balearic Islands to the east. In winter there the peak is covered by snow. Fauna Els Ports is one of the most interesting mountain areas of the Mediterranean because of its topography and rugged, lonely landscapes with vast forests and a diverse fauna. One of the most remarkable animals, the wild goat, is the symbol of Els Ports. But you can also find birds such as vultures, eagles and buzzards along with numerous other species. Mammals found here include wild cats, squirrels and otters. The crystal clear rivers contain crayfish and various other species. Bays Bays along the Costa Dorada on the Mediterranean are very impressive. The bright turquoise-blue water, golden sandy beaches and rugged bays have not yet been marred by large hotel chains. A walk along a section of the legendary GR route here is absolutely worthwhile. In the nearby villages and (yacht) ports you can enjoy the atmosphere of the beaches and boulevards, relax at a café or visit one of the many traditional festivals or numerous summer markets with their crafts and curios. Arts and crafts play a major role in Catalonia, especially ceramics and painting. Ebro Delta nature reserve and bird sanctuary The Ebro Delta is situated 20 minutes away by car. Here you can hike or cycle till your hearts content! Kilometers of sandy beaches border the Delta. The Ebro Delta comprises 320km² making it the second largest wetland in the western Mediterranean, after the French Camargue. In 1983, the Ebro Delta was declared a nature reserve. Here more than 300 species of birds can be admired, including the flamingo, Squacco Heron, Little Egret, Cattle Egret and bittern. Agriculture in the Ebro Delta consists mainly of rice fields. Tortosa This large city is characterized by its numerous Roman buildings. The shopping street, the Parador (luxury 4 star hotel in a converted 10th century castle), and the cathedral are all worth a visit. The Ebro River flows through the city and is a magnet for anglers. The main language here is Catalan. The green hilly area around the city is characterized by olive, almond and citrus orchards. |
